Using PhotoShop Quick Mask and Gaussian Blur to Feather a Selection

This tutorial was created using Photoshop CS3. You should be able to adapt the steps to other Photoshop versions.

1) Make your selection using any of the many selection methods offered in Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop Tutorial

2) Click the Quick Mask button to enter quick mask mode.

3) Apply a blur by Filter>Blur>>Gaussian Blur. Make sure the preview box is checked and adjust the radius slider until you get the feathering you are after.

4) Exit the Quick Mask mode by clicking the Quick Mask button again. Copy the selection to a new layer. (ctrl J) I have added a color layer between the new layer and background to show up the feathering.

Try this method out - it is very quick and easy and can save a lot of time when you are making selections that need to be feathered.
